My Minute: Find the Fun!

25 Apr

“I do not save time, I spend it. Time is the one thing you cannot save. Time is spent without even trying. Don’t save time, use the time that you have wisely.” –Danielle Bath, caregiver and mother of three.

Sixty seconds is all it takes to recharge, get an energy boost, or mentally, emotionally, and physically repair. My Minute is a weekly tip segment that offers easy ways to make your daily minutes work for you.

This Week’s My Minute: Find the Fun!

If you’ve ever watched your kids or any kids for that matter play, you’ll begin to notice something very quickly: kids find fun everywhere. Part of what makes those first early years relatively manageable is your ability to turn virtually anything—dinner time, bath time, car trips, shopping excursions, tidy-up-time– into a game, into something fun. As adults, we make fun less of a priority and, instead, treat it the way we treat an unexpected guest to Thanksgiving dinner. But fun is extremely important for your mind, body, and soul. It should occupy a position of importance right up there with a good night’s sleep and shoe shopping. Here’s how you can use some of your precious daily minutes to find the fun:

  •  Online Laughter: Download a comedy podcast to your MP3 player and take it with you on the road, on a walk, or at the gym. Search for casts on Podcast Alley or podcast.com.
  •  Play a Game: Mobile devices make it easy to access simple, fun, short games that give us a little boost of pleasure wherever we are. Try the popular game Draw Something where you and your virtual peers trade off on drawing and guessing silly pictures.
  •  Mae a Fun List: Start to pay attention to activities and experiences that you identify as “fun.” Sometimes we get a little swallowed up by life’s daily rhythms and we have to stop and think, “What do I find fun?” That’s o.k. Grab a notebook you can fit in your bag and start keeping a fun list. Don’t censor yourself, anything goes. Now challenge yourself to pick one fun thing to do every day!
